@chrisgeidner what is the significance of not using the word "gay" except in quotation marks? was it the common term in 1970s, early '80s?
@pgofhsm Yes, it was. Among gays. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.

@chrisgeidner in the NYRB piece re significance of “What it Means to be a Homosexual,” NYT non-use of "gay" given as evidence of homophobiaThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@chrisgeidner if gay had not entered general population's common parlance as synonym for homosexual, I don't see why NYT should have used it -
@pgofhsm It was enough so. The "getting the NYT to use 'gay' w/o quotes" was a whole thing. I was in my baby crib at the time, so, yeah. -
@chrisgeidner thx for explanation. was "gay" at the time understood to be inclusive of lesbians? (as presumably "homosexual" was) -
@pgofhsm Yes. Many older lesbians — note Bear Ride, Sally's sister — just say "gay." -
@chrisgeidner ah I thought gay=all homosexuals was a recent change in usage, hence eg 1979 March on Washington for Lesbian & Gay Rights
