Here was North Dakota's opposition to the request. (The state hired William Consovoy in DC as outside counsel.) —> https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/18/18A335/65538/20181002165418306_Opposition%20to%20Motion%20to%20Vacate.pdf …pic.twitter.com/PIFvsDo1W8

In today's order, Justice Ginsburg, joined by Justice Kagan, dissented, noting that the "risk of voter confusion appears severe here" because different rules applied during the primary election.https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4999244-18A335-Brakebill-v-Jaeger-Order.html …

Justice Kavanaugh did not participate. Also, as I've noted before, justices do not need to state their votes in applications like this. As such, all that we know is that a majority voted against vacating the stay, and that 2 of the 8 justices participating noted their dissent.

Those seeking to have the requirement — that a voter's ID have their "current residential street address" — enjoined say it discriminates against Native Americans in North Dakota. (The district court agreed.)pic.twitter.com/jbvDolZeBJ

The state countered that the law is needed to prevent fraud and ensure that people are getting the right ballots.pic.twitter.com/zvxiBW1VdO

Correction, via
@ssamcham: The ND SCOTUS application (see the thread that this is a reply to) only needed to be a 4-4, not majority, vote for the voter ID requirement to be enforced for this election b/c a tie vote would mean the 8th Cir decision, staying the injunction, stands.Show this thread

In other news I just received via mail a request trying to verify my current out of state address in order to register me to vote in Cali. Please note that I have not lived in Cali in 8 years, and have moved 3 times since then. Reason 1,000,001 why we need voter ID laws.
-
There is no reason to have voter id laws. Voter fraud is incredibly rare.
-
Once is too much.
-
Do you think 'only people who are wealthy enough to vote, deserve to vote' ?
-
No. But I do think you should show an ID. I think that we as a country should make a huge push to help all citizens get an ID. They deserve IDs just as much as wealthy people do. In fact you should be upset that they do not have IDs as it limits their access to lots of things.
-
It's more than just "show an ID", its also "keep it up to date, and make sure there aren't any tiny mistakes. If there were systems already in place to get everybody an ID, then sure, make it a requirement. But until then, ID laws exclude poor and old people.
-
Then we need to fix "that". Agree 100%. People need to have valid IDs in order to function in society & it should be a priority. That is something we all should be working very hard to resolve. If we can have mobil voter registration vans, we can and should have mobil ID vans.
-
Again, the voter ID laws only serve the purpose of excluding poor, old and minorities. It doesn't do anything to prevent voter fraud. It's like putting deadbolts on your bathroom door to stop burglars.

For y’all exclaiming how everyone has id for xyz... here’s some real-life facts for you: 1) The people living on the reservations here tend to be poor. Like way below poverty level poor. 2) The nearest DMV is 85 miles away. Not really walking distance. 1/
-
3) ID is supposed to be free. They’ve been charging $8. This can be more than they can afford. Remember: poor. 4) Can’t get an id unless you have an address. Reservations don’t have addresses. How will they get an id? 5) you can apply for CC online. Don’t need id. 2/
-
6) Not a whole lot of jetting off to exotic locals and staying in hotel rooms. Again: poor. This is absolutely meant to suppress Native American voters. They’ll likely vote Heitkamp, bcuz she’s really active and stands up for their community. /end
-
Lol, your argument is dumb. They're so poor they can't afford an $8 ID.....yeah oooookay.
-
Have you been to the reservations in ND? I have.
-
Yes, I lived in North Dakota for many years and been to a few reservations out that way. Lived in Minot and Glenburn. Your argueument that people can't afford an $8 dollar ID is quite silly and absurd.
-
*sigh* No, it’s not. I currently live here. I talk to the people who live here on a regular basis. But you do you. You’re just not worth my time.
#ByeBitch -
I'm going to jump in here and say that charging for I.D. for the sole purpose of voting is a poll tax. This action is against the 24th amendment.
