The secrecy surrounding large portions of Brett Kavanaugh’s records by Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley’s outright support of it, is something that should be a much bigger deal.https://twitter.com/dweaverDC/status/1035698047458725890 …

NYT, before nom: “The number of pages is said to run into the millions, which Mr. McConnell fears could hand Senate Democrats an opportunity to delay the confirmation vote ...” AP, tonight: “In all, 267,000 pages of Kavanaugh documents from his Bush years are being made public.”

That we have gone from that argument on July 7 — https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/07/07/us/politics/trump-mcconnell-supreme-court.amp.html … — to this reality less than two months later is as aggressive a position as McConnell and Grassley’s move in 2016 to block movement on Garland’s nomination. And everyone should understand that.

Unlike in 2016 — when McConnell and Grassley owned their blockade of Garland, to their ultimate political advantage — in 2018 they’re not doing so at all, instead trying to ignore it by having Grassley just claim that what they’re doing is not what they’re doing.

Postscript: The reason I included Trump in the first tweet in the thread is that the AP story is saying that Trump is withholding papers from the GWB White House of his own SCOTUS nominee from being released. More from

The Republicans don't give a sh-t and will steamroll this nomination as quickly as they can. The only solution is for ALL the Dems to take a slow cruise out of the country so 'no quorum' doesn't mean they all get arrested. But they won't do this. It's too radical for them.
-
Except, by rule, a quorum is assumed until someone ask for roll call. No Democrat, no roll call, GOP uses unanimous consent, and Kavanaugh is confirmed. https://www.senate.gov/reference/glossary_term/quorum.htm …
-
Not necessarily. They could get some Republican who has nothing to lose now - like Jef Flake - ask for the role call. Or any other R who has any doubts about how this SCOTUS nomination is going down. It is technically possible, but it is too radical for Ds.
-
That assumes that a handful of Democrats in deep red states want to lose in November.
-
It is that same handful of Ds who might vote for Kavanaugh.

If Kavanaugh is confirmed will it matter if red state Dems win, the republicans will just take everything to the SC and get it overturned. Dems will have a hard time passing anything for at least 20 years.
