Per pool: "Trump offered his 'warmest best wishes and sympathies' to the family of Aretha Franklin. He described her as a person he knew well and who worked for him. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is dead. She was a great woman, with a wonderful gift from God, her voice. She will be missed!

(Not quite clear what the "worked for him" means, but I was looking for times when they interacted, and all I can figure is that she was paid to sing at an event.)

Trump makes it sound like she was a maid/servant at Mar a Lagoon. So black women are either low IQ, dogs and or employees to Trump WTF? She sang for Obama’s inauguration and he didn’t mention cause its not about him.#RipArethaFranklin pic.twitter.com/aWfNcyX3hp

A celeb going a hotel opening isn't "working for" that hotel. Lots of NY club owners said Trump was always trying 2 get in photos with any celebrity he saw.

Good Lord! If he cut her a check to perform at his venue, she “worked” for him. Doesn’t mean she was his employee. If I hire a painter or an attorney and pay him, I’m not his boss, but he IS “working” for me. And he didn’t emphasize it, you did! Ugh!! #muchadoaboutnothing

If she sang for an inauguration, it’s safe to assume she was paid by the inaugural committee, so I don’t believe that would qualify. If he paid her to sing at his wife’s bday party, however, It would. I can’t believe I’m seriously having to explain the difference.

He’s such a twit. Tact and grace (through action, deed, or word-spoken or via Twitter) are not his strong suit. He had ONE job AND STILL somehow had to make it about himself.

That’s not a respectful way to refer to anyone - even if they were a housemaid!! Shows what he really thought of her - she was ‘the help’ - appalling.

Jesus we know😩😩Donald Trump uses problematic language but obviously he meant that he booked her as talent on at least one occasion. Receipts aren’t necessary. Famous people hire famous people. Moving on. Leave it to Donald Trump to upstage Aretha Franklin when she’s dead.
