So the argument for 3 is what: Mueller was laboring under some misimpression that Manafort & Gates had valuable info, was willing to do a deal with Gates without proffer, and now with Gates deposed he’s learned there would’ve been nothing to proffer, so the deal window has shut?

In either of those scenarios, there was only one deal for Manafort/Gates and Gates beat him to the finish line, which is interesting to think about in light of the relative firepower of their legal teams.

I think Manafort fearing for his life if he cooperates (or appears to be cooperating) is underrated. He was conspiring with some very not nice people.
