#SCOTUS granted 7 new cases this morning.
#SCOTUS granted, vacated, and and remanded a bunch of cases this morning — including Rucho v. Common Cause (NC redistricting) and Arlene's Flowers — in light of decisions this term. The moves mean the court is not planning to resolve either issue in the immediate future.
Rucho would have been a follow up to Gill and Benisek, and Arlene's would have been a follow up to Masterpiece Cakeshop.
The grants: - Sudan v. Harrison (16-1904) - WA Dept of Licensing v. Cougar Den, Inc. (16-1498) - Dawson v. Steager (17-419) - Nutraceutical v. Lambert (10-1094) - Bistek v. Berryhill (17-1184) - Helsinn Healthcare v. Teva Pharm (17-1229) - Henry v. Archer & White (17-1272)

It's a one-box Monday, so we almost certainly will have at least one more days of decisions after today. #SCOTUS
The first decision is Texas racial gerrymandering, Abbott v. Perez, with the 5-4 opinion by Alito. #SCOTUS
SCOTUS rules that the plaintiffs had the burden to "overcome the presumption of legislative good faith" for the 2013 legislature, and that the Texas court had "contravened these basic principles" by relaying too much on "taint" from 2011 plan.
Here is the opinion in Abbott, which concludes that 3 of the 4 challenged districts were lawful. https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/17-586_o7kq.pdf … #SCOTUS
Final decision of the day is Ohio v. American Express. 5-4 decision by Thomas, holding that Amex's antisteering provisions do NOT violate antitrust law. #SCOTUS
In Ohio v. Amex, Breyer writes the dissent. In Abbott, Sotomayor wrote the dissent.
Breyer is reading from the bench in his Amex dissent. There was some confusion at first, thinking they were done, which led Breyer to joke that people just don't understand that antitrust is important! #SCOTUS
#SCOTUS will hand down more opinions tomorrow, Tuesday, at 10a. The court did NOT, however, say that it will be the last day.
