Honestly, this could be the most threatening thing to happen to Jeff Sessions’ criminal justice aims since Trump was threatening to fire him every day.https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1001961235838103552 …

If people are going to pretend to not know who Trump is and what criminal justice advocates are dealing with in this administration, they can mock this. But, I am looking at the reality of who gets through to Trump and in what ways.

If you know those things, then you understand why a huge celebrity (esp one big on Twitter), properly prepared for such a meeting, could move him on their issue. This has been a Kushner-Sessions turf fight; this might have been Kushner’s attempt to pull things back his way.

For example, the mention of sentencing in Trump’s tweet — reform of which is a non-starter with Sessions — is notable to me. Sessions is the anti-sentencing reform guy. Last year, when he did this — https://twitter.com/chrisgeidner/status/863018235788234753?s=21 … ...

Sessions’ views, tho, nonetheless turned “sentencing reform” into “prison reform,” a winnowing down of what the criminal justice project included, even as a possibility within the administration. And yet, now, Trump’s tweeting about sentencing — not changes, of course, but talks.

And, yes, I know how little words mean from Trump, & I know how often he changes positions, & I know who runs the Congress. My point is not that this is advocates’ solution or “the fix” or anything, but just that this was probably one of the smartest ways to get his attention.

For advocates, getting Trump’s attention is half (or more) of the battle. And, for people whose aims aren’t necessarily going to get them tons of air time on Fox News, this was probably one of the smartest ways to get the conversation to him. </rant>

Agreed. Since Obama didn’t (for whatever reason) to get Trump to do it would take a celebrity who could flatter him and whose husband recently flattered him. Unlikely there are lasting effects, but for this one grandma, well done KKW, well done!

At one point there was serious bipartisan support for sentencing and prison reform. I wonder if that's changed.

It's smart to listen to people, Trump does that. Most of us are glad that it's not the black supremacists and anti-america advocate people that Obama did like Valerie Jarret. Trump is running circles around liberals and it's just fun to watch them chatter nonsense.

If control of either or both chambers flips in the November election, sentencing reform could be one of a handful of issues on which a Democratic Congress could pass something that Trump would sign without significant compromise.
