It’s been a long day. Today, 12 years ago, my father died. It’s such a weird thing to go through a whole day thinking about the fact, on this anniversary, that my father knows nothing of the life that I lead today.

When he was nearing death, I was a first-year associate at a big firm in Columbus. We had talked throughout the year about my experience, and it was pretty clear that he suspected that I knew that was not going to be the path for me.

As I’ve written before: He told me to do something that I cared about with my life, something that was inspired by my passion, something that drove me to do better. That’s become a non-negotiable for me in my life — and is advice that has always led me down the right path.

This morning, I got up and went to the Supreme Court to report on the decisions of the day, then to the office to focus on the Trump/Mueller storyline. Dad would have been so unbelievably proud of where my career has gone.

But, I also took some time today for myself and my health, which would have pleasantly surprised him, I think. And, finally, I came home early enough to spend some time just thinking — happily — about all my dad gave me. Despite the fact that he’s gone, I know how lucky I am.

And so, I head to bed tonight missing my dad, mainly for the joys we would be able to share over my successes but also for the advice (or sometimes just random comments) he would have for me — and that I still try to guess at — in those lesser moments.

Lost my dad about 15 years ago. Miss him every day and I know how you mean - we moved to a place he would've loved a few years ago.

He'd be right at home immediately I know just as you said

I don’t know what your beliefs are about death but I like to believe wherever he is my dad is, he’s smiling a great big smile from ear to ear & is proud of his little girl. I hope you look at your many accomplishments & find comfort with the knowledge your dad is proud of you too
