Louisiana, we need to stand up for our students and our local parish economies in one of the easiest ways I know how: vote. As the 2020 Louisiana Teacher of the Year, I am going to vote “NO” on Amendment 5. /thread
Long-standing corporate tax exemptions have kept millions of dollars out of our public schools and away from students. Louisiana gives away more in tax breaks than any other state in the country. Schools don’t see the benefit of this.
Amendment 5 is not just a continuation of this, but it gives corporations the right to negotiate their taxes, a right not available for working people. A “NO” vote will help protect our local jobs that can’t be shipped out of state.
A “NO” vote will safeguard against cuts to safety, health care, and education. A “NO” vote will prevent tax hikes most working families simply can’t afford during a pandemic—because if wealthy corporations are paying less, we will be paying more.
Amendment 5 won’t just inflict pain now, it has far reaching consequences: it will devastate our economy, harm our ability to train our young people for jobs of the future, and rob us of the infrastructure projects that keep many of us working.
Local parish budgets have been stretched thin due to the pandemic; I do not see how we sustain the passage of Amendment 5. For the sake of our children, their education, and the future economic prosperity of our state, vote “NO” on Amendment 5.
