Happy ending though -- the authors responded with admirable patience to this nonsense & the manuscript was accepted

Why did the editor forward that review to the authors? Yeah I know we can get into a debate about whether editors should EDIT reviews. But this review is useless to the authors and just a scolding to the editor re: what is appropriate for consideration in the journal.
-
That is the Q. IME, revs like this sometimes also contain useful content, & since I don't like to edit reviews (for me it's all in or binned), it leaves the ed in a tricky situation. Had I edited this one, I'd have left it in but told authors they need not respond to this comment

I don’t understand this public shaming of a comment written with kindness and that has some truth.

-
Haha
But of course the reason I shared it in the 1st place was out of admiration and gratitude, and so we might all learn something
And the ONLY reason I think the professor should have signed this review was to claim rightful credit for such a wise and generous contribution - Još 3 druga odgovora

And yet I’m not sure it’s an argument entirely without merit. Just an utterly absurd context in which to raise it.

Yeah there are elements I could agree with. For example, I think there is strand of this comment that is basically saying "we aren't hypothesis testing in this field, so there is little or no point preregistering" & w/ certain caveats that IMO is defensible & maybe even sensible

I'm curious whether this comment is targeting toward something in the manuscript, or just the fact that it was pre-registered?
-
The latter

in a manuscript review of an ECR's preregistered (non-RR) study
This is one of the reasons I believe professors should have to sign their reviews
