Some thoughts on this, and what I see as the potential difficulties for a future unionist campaign...

Only fun looking differences on 2016 seems to be age, although even then it isn't linear (45s to 64s down, 65+s up)

Iowa Caucus, Irish election polls, Australian National party spill... This is great fun for us who love politics but can't be bothered to learn a language that isn't English.

And as you asked, yes there is polling evidence that this will go down well with the public

It's the same with the lobby briefing earlier today, the government are doing unconventional things to start the fights they want, and nobody else has quite worked out how to respond to that.

And then, hypothetically speaking, if a prominent human right lawyer wins the leadership election, the subsequent court cases can be used to bash them with. But hey, I'm a cynic.

I'm guessing that by "emergency legislation" they mean "legislation that will be voted on before the end of the Labour leadership election" so that Labour has to vote against it.

Hate to be a cynic, but it feels like the main purpose of this law is that the government wants the subsequent legal fight.

Looks like No 10 have come to a view about who the next Labour leader will be.

"The shocking influence of lawyers on policy" is a pretty unsubtle attack.

It's amazing how many angry emails you get in response to writing anything about Scotland.

Really great event with and my ever insightful friend on how Labour can regain power in five years' time. Plenty of notes of optimism but caution too. Also some great excellent questions from the audience!

But even then, I wonder if the reason it is driving people towards independence is not just because of actually wanting to stay in the EU, but because it further demonstrates how Scotland’s politics is out of step with the rest of the UK.
