Earlier this year, I spent a lot of time in the town of Izyum in eastern Ukraine, where I became a regular at the local optical market. The town was once considered the optical capital of the Soviet Union. Read my photo essay on Izyum and the pains of deindustrialization.

After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.

Another great jam to finish the day. This one by Anatoly Vapirov, who was born in Berdyansk, Ukraine. Gotta love the brief Led Zeppelin lick at 20:28.

Bad news indeed. Licensing and registration requirements are powerful ways that Belarus is able to control and restrict the media environment.

You should really go read about the protests happening right now, but if you want to also read something fun about Belarus, here is a photo essay I made about a baseball team in a factory town near Grodno.

Four years ago I spent a summer studying in Belarus. I miss that place and the wonderful friends I met there. Many of those people are standing for dignity today, and I hope the world is watching. Жыве Беларусь!
