Proposed fusion reactors would actually be much hotter, and use a different reaction than that inside of the Sun. If they were actually the same, they would be huge!

The most surprising yet true thing anyone has ever pointed out to me on Wikipedia is that the Sun is so bright because it is so big. The power production rate is actually like a few lightbulbs in a box, or the heat from a compost pile or Lizard! From:

No this isn't caramel boiling on a stovetop on A1 of today's -- it's an extreme close-up picture of the surface of the sun

Academic sentence I wish I could have written: “Considering the evolution discussed in [2] and [6] one may interpret the German word Meerschweinchen as an attempt at expressing the idea of a «small quasi-capybara that looks a bit like a porpoise».”

SPT group photo of the team at the South Pole! Only the second time we've posed on-top of the telescope cabin, but it helps to capture how big the telescope really is!

I was really surprised to see a pristine WPA marker in sidewalk concrete next to the offices in Tucson, AZ! 1938 was the peak of the depression era program that gave millions out-of-work Americans jobs. I've only seen markers on bridges etc.

that there is a double-decker bus in one of the buildings at ? It’s an old London Routemaster bus that has been converted into meeting rooms (one upstairs, one downstairs), and the driver’s cab can be used for video conference calls. ❤️

This image means a lot to me. A few years ago the Duke cosmology group was tiny (me!). Here you see some of our faculty, postdocs, grad students and alumni. I'm especially proud of the three former undergrads who are all now in grad school working with us as colleagues.

How does UoA's Mirror Lab build the largest mirrors in the world? Oobleck! The polishing tool contains a non-newtonian fluid that acts as a solid and grinds down imperfections locally, but glides across the glass as a liquid without altering its global shape.

Today at the meeting in Tucson we had our traditional Dark Energy School, where we teach each other science topics. Afterwards, we had a tour of Mirror Lab where the mirrors were made. Below you see a GMT mirror being polished.

This week at the on Cerro Pachón, the M1M3 mirror cell (teal) & M1M3 surrogate mirror (white) were moved into place below the upper section of the coating chamber (silver) for fit testing. Here they are, all together for the first time!
