Julie made a really great decision to explain the notion of higher-kinded types at the very beginning of this course. We have to first get a solid grasp on what type constructors *are* before we study classes of them (e.g. Monad).

Nix tip: Working with spotty internet connection? Pass the "--fallback" flag to nix-build, nix-env, nix-shell, etc. to have nix build from source when downloading fails. Working on the plane with no internet? Use: --option substituters "" to disable cache downloading altogether

I don't know who needs to hear this other than whoever owned this house last but when you paint the edge of a door it gets a little bit larger so you probably have to sand it down first

Some programming languages are pretty great, especially if we can still think of ways they could be improved

bayern reuses their bottles and six-pack holders, you can just give the stuff right back to the brewery and they use it again

missoula really seems ahead of the curve on a lot of this kind of stuff. julie tells me this store's been reusing jars like this for at least 20 years now

it's so easy in software for two people to be doing something that's nominally the same but have so little in common

The program doesn't often stay like this forever, but it's a great starting point

I love starting a new program when the first thing I write is main = readInputs >>= transform >>= writeOutputs Tasks that have this structure and data that fits in memory are very nice, the whole job is immediately divided into three main parts

Do any of y'all use Stack's Nix integration on a distro that *isn't* NixOS? I'm trying to figure out whether that's a use case worth documenting, or if the entire purpose of the Stack/Nix integration feature is that it's required to get Stack working on NixOS.

If you don't use stylish-haskell: It's an autoformatter for haskell code and you may want to check it out. It mostly organizes imports and language pragmas, but can also do things like neatly vertically line up case and record expressions if you're into that sort of thing.

haskell-src-exts supports BlockArguments as of version 1.23.0 (thanks ), which you may have been awaiting if you use stylish-haskell
