Reports suggest it might also have to do with chemical reactions from certain cosmetics/hand creams. Appears to happen more with women than men (this was a woman's keyboard)

@chr1sa Not that many necessarily- my wife’s keyboard looked like this after a year, Apple said it was from oils in certain cosmetics/lotions. -
