One of 2018's most underplayed space stories: The successful test of a satellite-launched net that captures and drags space debris safely out of orbit.

How much happier would the world be if the original designers of the electric outlet had just turned that frown upside down? (gif thanks to ancient article because I couldn't be bothered to shop it myself)

Talking w/ friend who is going deaf, I can see huge opportunity for glasses that do real-time speech-to-text transcription w/ directional mikes following eye movement to focus on the speaker. Ideally w/ transcript projected holographically on their face What's the hardest part?

Needless to say these glasses would also have built-in hearing aids that would amplify the sound where the eyes are looking (possibly also amplifying certain frequencies depending on ID of male vs female speaker). Would help deal w/ problem of indiscriminate spatial amplification

How is it that in 2018 a "electrical short" can not only cause a railroad crossing barrier not to descend but also not trigger a system-wide warning? This is control theory 101. It's time to STOP MAKING OPEN LOOP SYSTEMS

Kind of astonishing how little material scarcity we endure in the modern day —Like as recently as 1973 you couldn't buy gas on certain days of the week, fruit went out of season, and TV went "off the air" at night. Now it's just Xmas gifts and flu shots.

I fear that the lesson from the Gatwick drone fiasco is not that we need more counter-drone deployment, but rather that current counter-drone products don't work where the drone is bespoke, thousands of feet away and moving fast. Or even worse autonomous & not radio controlled

This is why we can’t have fun tech things; only takes one bad apple. AV’s turn will come—probably with a remote car or truck.

This case study shows an ingenious use of robot milling to produce ice hockey sticks. We never knew that they were so challenging to make!
