there's an electrician in my house rn and he's maaaybe 47 and he just called me sweetheart and it was FINE. i was FINE with it. it felt COZY. maybe because he's so southern and comfortable in his electrician role and had earlier spoken of the snow in montana?

[yes a stranger in my house—if covid gets me it gets me, but at least i will have functional electricity]

so there's this age line that seems real, but also this vibe thing that seems real and it seems to combine trust with distance so—to call me "sweetheart" you gotta be...72, or somebody who's emitting very warm vibes & who doesn't know my life with any modicum of real intimacy??

why no intimacy? if somebody actually knows me, i can't see past the roles i have in my head for us. i'm thinking of a longtime colleague & friend in his 40s whom i love and adore and feel very warmly towards. i would shrivel up and die if he called me sweetheart in earnest

nah i think i'm going down the wrong path here—he couldn't call anybody sweetheart convincingly i think i'm just not very close with anyone who has the urge to call anyone sweetheart. i think the no-intimacy thing is a problem of small friend sample size???

some people are just "the kind of person that calls other people sweetheart with nothing but true warmth" and i think i get that vibe read immediately

i THINK i could reliably predict that these people are very open, comfortable with themselves, and affectionate with their loved ones, the type of people who volunteer to help folks in trouble and who become the favorite grandparent

BUT THEN there are the sweetheart-callers who come off as skeezy, and it's not confidence they exude but cockiness/insecurity. confidence and cockiness are super different vibes and, i think, easy to get a read on

anyway guess it turns out anybody with a strong natural inclination to call me and others "sweetheart" can do so as long as they're not a cocky bastard what even is this thread

update: the electrician has just called me "hon" and i also enjoyed that, his tone so unassuming, his movement down the hall so sure and simple

this tweet reads like poetry :) also, i imagine this is an uncommon occurrence but how would it feel for someone younger (~early 20s) to use diminutives with you? i think my gut reaction would be annoyance? kinda like “alright, very funny... you little shit”

ha! yeah this has happened to me a few times before...i think only in a transaction, like a cashier or server. jarring at first but then...so cute to me. they're in control of the transaction, so focused on their task, doing it with finesse, helping helpless me...delightful
