Dropping out of status games because you're not winning them is a great way to feel better about not winning them.

It's also a great way to ensure you lack the skills to play them when the consequences loom large: getting a job or getting funding, realizing you lack human connection, making a change in your community/country, determining when somebody is using you to climb the status ladder

a handful of people have told me that playing status games feel gross and hishonest, and often even scorn-worthy which is a take that could itself could be interpreted as a status play, or maybe a cope (like you’re talking about here)https://twitter.com/choosy_mom/status/1223852838167564289 …

obsessing about status and signaling is a phase a certain kind of nerd reliably goes through - i feel like i went through a pretty mild form of it but it probably helps that i was pretty popular in college so i don't have a lot of insecurities about being low-status or w/e

i wonder if there's a kind of betrayal some nerds feel when they learn about status and signaling, like the social world is less nice than it was supposed to be or something

it seems a little like the kind of thing that you wish you could unsee but can’t thinking a lot about status doesn’t often help you accumulate more of it, and it doesn’t make you feel much better about the whole situation either (i.e. it’s low-status to talk about status)

yeah i guess you can get into a spiral that's both structurally similar to and related to the incel spiral also idk i think i'm capable of talking about status in a high-status way, the basic deal is to not leak out resentment (also similar to the incel spiral)
