“The first thing you need isn't a good idea, "soft skills", or even being particularly skilled at coding. The first thing you need is enough time and energy to keeping going after an 8+ hour workday, combined with enough confidence to push forward.” https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14588644 …

This comment taught me that making sure my wellbeing reached baseline levels was the biggest force multiplier on my output at work. The biggest change that I had to make was fixing my relationship with sleep.

When I was in high school, I would stay up late reading things on the internet or playing games...and then I'd wake up after 6-7 hours of sleep to get to school. My parents also weren't great role models here either.

My first year of full time work: I would often feel like a failure when I'd wake up in the morning without getting enough sleep because I knew I'd be late to my meetings. How can I adult when I can't get something as simple as sleep right?

(I could've taken the approach of rewiring my brain to stop being such a perfectionist about sleep, but there are also significant benefits to getting enough sleep—and I knew I wasn't getting enough sleep.)

Step 1: Wake up at the same time every day. Start simple. If I'm waking up at 10am every day, I will continue waking up at 10am every day. Step one is to be consistent. You don't need to sleep at the same time, but you have to sleep when you're sleepy.

This is hard. To be consistent you have to *value sleep over every other distraction you might have at bedtime*. Want to finish reading that article? Nope, go to sleep. Want to socialise on the internet? Nope, go to sleep. Want to win a game of dota? Nope, go to sleep.
