Let’s talk about something awkward: people hearing from God Not in the sense of “an angel came to me” but in the sense of “I pray and God talks/talked back” Confession: I absolutely have the experience of God talking to me in prayer, these days in a full fledged conversation

The reason that’s a confession is because I don’t really talk about it in public—I might acknowledge that that’s what I experience but I almost never say, “well, when I was talking with God last night” or “God told me...” I do this for a number of reasons I think

The first is basic awkwardness: it’s uncomfortable to say it, feels simultaneously like a weird flex and a possible sign of delusion, with a holier-than-thou vibe I also worry that Christians will think I think they should pray like me (I don’t) and will feel bad

But the second is that it’s a conversation ender: “God said this, so there.” You either have to accept it or do an uncomfortable ad hominem—“you think you hear God but you don’t.” I think it’s real bad to put people in that position, especially for leaders

I’ve had a few leaders who claimed to hear relatively reasonable things from God, but who I basically thought were listening to their own voice in their head No good way to say that But that’s the problem! Those leaders prevent actual conversations and information sharing

Does God ever say unreasonable things? How do you respond? Also, if you were to share your experiences with other leaders, is it likely they’d think the same thing (that you were listening to your own voice inside your head)?

Mm, good question I would say that I constantly hear God say things that others would find unreasonable; his values seem very different from everyone else’s. But they don’t seem to contradict scripture, if anything he takes scripture much much more seriously than everyone else

Examples: that voice seems to actively hate worldly success as a goal; loathes blindness and gets pissed off at it; is radically relaxed about the future and discourages most planning; is cunning; is much less soft than you’d think; is willing to deceive if necessary for the good
