right now, most of our social graphs are *involuntarily* in stasis this is unnatural and strangely uncomfortable

humans are intensely social animals—we relentlessly and instinctually form, maintain, and update thousands of interpersonal/parasocial relationships some people might have different relational styles, but you can’t really turn your social brain off

to cultivate and maintain your network of relationships, you have to interact with each person at a certain frequency (i.e. spaced repetition, but for people instead of ideas)https://twitter.com/choosy_mom/status/1222292632111472640 …

This has a lot to do with time scarcity and frequency requirements Most of us contact our primary partners daily, but Dunbar proposes that you need to interact with a friend at least weekly to qualify for the 5-layer, monthly for the 15-layer, and annually for the 150-layer pic.twitter.com/eYIuMvSZBo

most of these frequent interactions happen organically via work, school, clubs, parties, and the communal rituals they generate unless you work alone and live in a very rural place, you probably have a fairly dense social infrastructure built into your daily routine

in quarantine, this infrastructure disappears—the number of interactions you can have in a day plummets accordingly, the depth and number of relationships you can maintain also shrinks it also becomes far more difficult to establish and develop new relationships

i suspect many of us will emerge from this quarantine with a few empty dunbar slots it’ll be like going on holiday during school and making new acquaintances as you settle back in (except everyone had a stressful, lonely summer)https://twitter.com/choosy_mom/status/1222292640311365632 …

It's an interesting exercise to try mapping your own social graph onto Dunbar's bullseye configuration—do the circles seem accurate to you? What about interaction frequency v. closeness? How often do you contact your 5-layer friends? 15-layer? 150-layer?
