sometimes i wonder if i’m wasting my time accumulating/hoarding usd at a dayjob, instead of spending my time learning how to farm, build stuff, fix machinery, physically defend myself, etc.

it’s not that the usd could lose value relative to other currencies, but rather the realization that there is an apocalyptic scenario (of unknown but probably non-zero likelihood) in which government backed money could literally cease to be a meaningful thing to own

Yep. I live on a working farm where I raise ~ 50% of my food, log my own firewood, etc. And exactly as above - bandits and injuries are show stoppers
