there are thousands of billionaires in the world and only maybe a couple dozen of them are doing anything cool or imaginative with their money

i get that they want to preserve + grow their wealth, to feed their ego or give to their children or something and if i had a billion dollars i’d prob dodge taxes (start a foundation) too but damn, why not put aside a couple $100m and see what kind of wacky stuff you could do?

can you imagine if you were a billionaire and the concept of money collapsed as a universal social contract? personally i’d be mega pissed that i spent my time buying houses and airplanes and nba teams when i could’ve done some way wilder shithttps://twitter.com/choosy_mom/status/1238109273365704704 …

chad donkey from shrek 2 @choosy_momit’s not that the usd could lose value relative to other currencies, but rather the realization that there is an apocalyptic scenario (of unknown but probably non-zero likelihood) in which government backed money could literally cease to be a meaningful thing to ownShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -
not really trying to make a political point here—generally i’m pretty agnostic on billionaires. mostly i’m just perplexed that thiel and elon are the exception rather than the norm

I know of a few great philanthropic endeavors in medicine and basic research: Gates, Allen, Knight. Each of them help found or contributed to institutions. I imagine a strong fear of spending $ for no results which also explains financial success.

was actually gonna include ‘useful’ along w cool/imaginative in the first tweet, but decided against it bc of philanthropic work i just wish there were more uber-wealthy people willing to spend $ for fun or lulz, instead of results (financial or otherwise)
