i wonder if coronavirus and the possibility of future viruses will significantly warp the perceived incentive structure for becoming a doctor

at least in america, most doctors will truthfully tell you they do it for altruistic reasons (healing the sick, serving the public) but no one will deny that the other benefits are attractive too—high pay, job security, prestige and respect in the community, etc.

most white collar employees have the privilege of staying home in a pandemic situation, but medical professionals have to spend even more time at work (directly exposed to the worst cases) as the crisis deepens

we don’t usually think of medicine as a profession with acute risks of mortality but it seems plausible, eventually, to compare the occupational hazards of hospitals to e.g. firefighting, or work with heavy machinery
