Was talking with a friend who works in the news/publishing industry recently, and he told me: “If you were to pick up a copy of the NYT and read every story on the front page, you’d learn more about what’s happening in the world than a whole day on Twitter”

This is almost certainly true I’m quite poorly informed on most current events and politics, and undoubtedly there are stories in the NYT every day that I otherwise might not encounter through social media or word of mouthhttps://twitter.com/choosy_mom/status/1217650597660246016 …

this is a purposefully uninformed opinion—as a rule, I try to minimize the amount of attention I pay to electoral politics mostly just posting this so I’ll be able to quote tweet it in november

But the world is big, and there are far more stories to tell than any one person can possibly follow Inevitably the information we consume will be an incomplete and biased snapshot of the world

If there is a ‘perfect’ cross-section of all possible information (not a foregone conclusion, IMO), then my choices are probably suboptimal But they aren’t arbitrary—I put non-zero effort into curating my inputs, and it would take a lot to convince me to let someone else do it

So for me, the operative question is: Can the folks at the New York Times do a better job of deciding what I should read than I can? I’m skeptical, but will probably read the next newspaper or magazine I come across (for the first time in maybe a year)
