American undergraduate exclusivity is certainly a Bad Thing (especially when it only belongs to a small set of rich white guys) and it should be mitigated But striving towards universal college education is a bad norm that perpetuates bad institutions

on the other hand, i know plenty of "elite" students who don't really seem to have regrets, they are quite happy now that they've landed The Gig {consultant, SWE, IB, etc} at The Firm - merely a new latter to climb.

good point. i may be universalizing from my friends. i wonder what the defining traits are between someone who is happy at The Gig and someone who feels stuck in The Gig, or lucky to have left The Gig World
