When I use a nifty turn of phrase, it usually isn’t totally off the cuff—most of my metaphors are informally workshopped over time This makes me a little self-conscious when I know a friend has heard me tell a story/describe an idea before

If you spend a lot of time with someone, you start to hear them tell the same story multiple times I’ve observed my friends doing this, and I’ve seen their stories get a little more polished and well-paced with each iteration—super neat!

While I think it’s delightful to witness others developing stories, I worry that people get annoyed when they hear my stories for the second or third time

I think I have a desire to be (or be seen as) someone who always speaks cleverly and never falls back on ‘old material’ I guess I want my communication to be closer to improv and farther from standup—I’m sure many comedians have written on this topic

Replying to @choosy_mom
Honestly the annoyance of listening to a story another time is not worth the concern; if you have to tell it to someone new, the rest of them will understand. It's likely you feel that way about it too? Much better option than just firing off every story just once

Agreed, I don’t often let the self-consciousness prevent me from retelling stories, but I also don’t often surface/address the self-consciousness either
