In front of the house where my dad grew up, there was square ditch in the front yard, about 7-8ft wide Every year they’d buy a piglet and put it in the pit, where it slept and ate their food scraps & feces They’d eat it for lunar new year—the only meat they would have all year

My dad grew up in the 60s with his grandparents in rural China They had survived several major famines, and knew a lot of people who hadn’t Their secret: they each slept on two bags of wheat, which they never touched unless no other food was available

When my parents were in college, an elephant died at the local zoo (old age/malnutrition) They disposed of the body by selling it to the college—the students and the dining hall were grateful for some cheap meat
