I’ve been pretty lucky in cultivating a Twitter community that is overwhelmingly positive & respectful, but a few of my female friends have run into men shaming them for posting tame selfies/accusing them of being “thots” (& worse) and it’s pretty frustrating to witness

on some level I think it’s also because men are insecure about preening and broadcasting their own attractiveness as an adolescent, I remember this behavior being stigmatized as ‘gay’ “If we can’t do it, then it must be Bad”

Oh, this is an interesting take I hadn't considered. & sad! I love seeing my mutuals' faces, men & women. Selfies don't have to be about wanting sexual attention (& I mostly don't see anything wrong w/ that if they are). Self-portraiture is an ancient form of artistic expression.

Yeah, aside from the individual psychological reasons behind it I think it's, unfortunately, a performative act rewarded by certain parts of Twitter. But there are also a lot of really good men on here that I think do a great job of modeling good/respectful behavior.

I was talking w my sister about this today—many men have a hard time relating with women as full human beings somehow I think we are instructed create a higher threshold for women to enter our Dunbar circle ime this is especially true of men without close female family members
