just as the poor try to protect their children from the fact of not-being-well-off itself, so should the rich protect their children from their own well-to-doness
but I don’t think my parents (or most wealthy parents) intentionally hid that knowledge from me rather they didn’t position themselves as wealthy people, so the default assumption was that we were vaguely ‘middle class’

this ‘middle class’ assumption seemed to hold true even in my friends’ households where their parents were surgeons and high-paid corporate lawyers (and they owned 4-5 new luxury cars, lake houses, took big international vacations, etc.)

now that I think about it: after basically a lifetime of interacting with mostly the children of wealthy professionals, I’ve never heard anyone say they come from a ‘wealthy’ family most I’ve heard is ‘upper middle class’ and even that feels rare
