For a long time I used meditation (mostly vipassana/anapana) to cope with strong negative emotions Somewhat recently I’ve grown suspicious that it’s actually been an avoidance thing

Not a knock on meditation at all, it’s mostly about the intention behind it. Generally I’m a more motivated, confident, charitable person when I’m practicing regularly. But think I’m gonna stop using it in crisis mode, maybe try to magnify the feelings instead...

Aren't there some kinds of meditation where you do magnify or go into the feelings? @QiaochuYuan @meditationstuff @Malcolm_Ocean Actually yeah, how is the bio-emotive stuff compatible with the observer-of-thoughts/feels thing?

I feel like this+OP is revealing multiple misconceptions I have (/ that are common?) about meditation, but I'm not sure what they are.

There’s a failure mode that can feel like progress for a very long time. And it can be progress on some dimensions while being neutral for others and making yet others worse and worse and worse.https://meditationstuff.wordpress.com/2019/08/20/mechanisms-and-motivations-of-self-suppression-curated-post/ …

Any system that ignores parts of the entire system, that doesn’t exercise and explore pretty much everything, eventually, will slip into this failure mode, eventually, afaik. Then a person will eventually become more and more rigid in thinking and behavior. 😬

So, yeah, “going into emotions” can be very good, at the right times. “Concentration” can be very good, at the right times. “Vipassana,” etc. Contemporary understanding of meditation tends to be pretty narrow and messed up.

This failure mode is something that has often discouraged me from practicing more, since it feels unconstructive/suppressive Do you recommend any readings or techniques for overcoming this?

“One can get all sorts of positive effects, for months or even years, but eventually things grind to a halt, the practitioner tangles themselves into a corner or piles just too much stuff onto too much stuff.” I think I’ve got some technical debt to tackle here
