The consultant route is the way to get into senior management without having to commit to a particular industy and take the career risk it withers and dies before you turn 40

I'm no McBainCG defender, but in 2019 this seems like unironically good reasoning for 'high-achieving' new grads For a lot of industries these days, the risk of withering and dying within 2 decades is a pretty prudent one to hedge against

That's part of the point. There are some negative things to say about it but there shouldn't be any mystery. It's a highly rational choice for people who are ambitious and don't like big, concentrated risks
