Most of my friends here have a very different relationship to their jobs than the norms I've taken for granted in San Francisco Not as much talk about passion, impact, mission, legacy, etc.

On some level, people in tech seem to believe they are architects working *on* the machinery of capitalism, rather than players working inside it

I think this perception mostly stems from proximity to the small class of real architects (influential and/or high profile founders)

However, my hunch is that the majority of rank-and-file tech people–myself included–are basically playing the same game as my friends in 'traditional' jobs
