Esther Choo MD MPH Retweeted Dr Unburnt  🔥Poorman

This thread explains why maybe - just maybe - women’s problems in medicine might have been better explained by a WOMAN IN MEDICINE @nytimes!!https://twitter.com/DrPoorman/status/1027583856621309952 …

      Esther Choo MD MPH added,

      Dr Unburnt  🔥Poorman @DrPoorman
Women experienced a greater increase in depressive symptoms than men. The authors attribute this to work-home conflict. But that conflict is not just about the home. 3/

Where could the @nytimes possibly find a practicing female physician who could knowledgeably and skillfully opine on the demoralizing experiences of women in medicine? It’s so hard...

I’m not suggesting men cannot or should not speak up for women. Indeed, the equity movement RELIES on #HeForShe. And I’m not trashing the op-ed - it is a well written piece by an outstanding science communicator who I respect and follow and amplify.

It just that the @nytimes is a rare platform, and the pieces on this topic are few and far between. To have that very very rare moment to shine a light on our careers and how they can and must improve, and to have it miss the mark....

The last prominent piece on women’s careers in medicine was this one, by a woman anesthesiologist who argued against flexible careers for women and bemoaned the wasted spots mothers occupied in medicine. https://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/12/opinion/12sibert.html …

I’m convinced it justified the bias of thousands of hospital and med school leaders across the country. Thanks, @nytimes

Maybe they felt a twinge of regret, after hundreds of us wrote in and asked them to please represent working parents of the 21st century. Or maybe their new Gender Editor suggested a more supportive, modern piece.

Perhaps that’s the moment they said - “I know, let’s find a man who can explain this problem with women in medicine to us!”? There are too few women’s voices in media as it is. At the very least, let us retain our role speaking for ourselves on women’s issues.

The editors are willfully ignorant. So. Darn. Frustrating.
