and maybe also a meta-point, which is that even for those projects that are in the "this is a messy hack and we'll let a 1000 flowers bloom" phase, that process still requires $$ and time, and it's worth creating a system that encourages/rewards that work

You've given me a lot to look into / think about! Thanks :-) A couple quick responses:

re: consulting models, I actually agree this is probably the easiest path forward. However, a company like anaconda is ultimately beholden to investors, as we've seen with recently pivots by them away from OSS

numfocus is in a better general position to purely consider the goals of the community rather than profit etc, but it doesn't seemed positioned currently to do a lot of this work (e.g. it doesn't have a consulting-based revenue stream to my knowledge)

I'd love to see more non-profit groups that perform data/infrastructure services in return for $$$ and funnel that back into some collective pot to fund developers

the trick is creating a model that does this kind of work, but doesn't end up totally de-prioritizing the goals of the community and focusing on the interests of people that have lots of $$$ (as, many would argue, has happened with the Linux Foundation)

and, arguably, is going to inevitably happen with profit-based analytics companies such as anaconda. It's just so tempting to build tech that is "crucial" enough that you can become a bottleneck and make tons of $$$. This is exactly what OSS should try to prevent!
