Seriously? There is no non-deprecated way in 10.8 to figure out what version of Mac OS X you're on? Parse the SystemVersion.plist is it???

@peternlewis I suppose “sw_vers -productVersion” is a little better than parsing SystemVersion.plist but too bad about Gestalt.

@mjtsai @peternlewis No doubt if you file a radar, the response will be "applications don't need to know the system version". :-(

@siegel @mjtsai @peternlewis [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] operatingSystemVersionString] is non-deprecated, though "not OK for parsing".

@rbrockerhoff @siegel @mjtsai @peternlewis In my experience, Gestalt code always ends up as a rat's nest of conditionals.

@chockenberry I think that says more about the nature of reality than Gestalt.

@mjtsai True, but parsing Gestalt is a pain, so it tends to happen in one place. Easier to sprinkle NSClassForString and -performsSelector:

@chockenberry @siegel @mjtsai @peternlewis I suppose all these various APIs (even Gestalt) call sysctl(3) to get the system version?

@chockenberry @siegel @mjtsai @peternlewis I remember using Gestalt when setting min system in the plist was unreliable, and only in main().
