    For everyone wondering why there’s no True Tone on the new iPhone, take a look at how much space they use on the top bezel. Won’t fit…

        Would you rather use that space for cameras or white point adjustments? Yeah, I thought so.

        @chockenberry Interesting. Given the rumoured bezel-free design for next year’s iPhone, I’m wondering if we’ll ever see True Tone on iPhone.

        . @HarshilShah1910 I’m thinking that’s a likely scenario. iPad is bigger and for reading, so its the product line that gets True Tone.

        @chockenberry This is how much space they use on the bezel. It's that tiny thing in the middle. Too much blu tackpic.twitter.com/sdTRmMnsga

        @ivovic The blu tack is the extent of the light detection (larger than sensor). Also that cable connects to a chip which takes up space :-)

        @chockenberry That sensor housing is flush up against the front panel in its own tiny bucket, it's pretty clear from the picture.

        @chockenberry The incidental light cone comes from all around, it's shallow mounted not a the bottom of a cavern.

        @chockenberry I wonder if perhaps you're mistaking the speaker cavity for the light sensor? I'm sorry to suggest something so obvious.

        @chockenberry Also noteworthy: You wouldn't need more than one on the phone. Too close to matter. Thanks for your response.

        @ivovic Yep, I’m interested in this stuff. A birdie confirms space is the issue, but I suspect next year’s bezel removal also plays a part…

        @chockenberry yep. TRRS socket removal seems to have been preemptive rather than immediately necessary this gen as well. Preparations indeed

        @chockenberry does the 7 have a DCI-P3 display?

        0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
      2. Count Franken ‏@chockenberry Sep 8

        . @markmalstrom Yes, they said it has “wide color” which implies DCI-P3 with their own gamma and whitepoint adjustments.

      @chockenberry disagree, there is space. tons of it by iPhone standards. Yield? Cost? Can't think of a good reason....

      @chockenberry so this means higher power consumption for the screen? Or the user has to keep adjusting?
