I’m tweeting at 4am because today is a very important day! No matter the day/month ordering, 02/02/2020 is the same backwards and forwards! May your Palindrome Day be filled with beautiful symmetry.

4/ The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope Ever finish a book and immediately want to start it over again? This book - a classic of young adult literature which won the 1975 Newbery Honor - was so compelling I missed my subway stop 3 different times while reading it!

Just paid $199 for 17 tiny tubes of watercolor (!!!) and now I understand why all the artists are starving! To add insult to injury, many of the finest grade watercolor pigments are highly toxic. Maybe if I inhale enough paint this hobby will start to make financial sense.

3/ “Prague Winter”, Madeleine Albright’s combination memoir and history of WWII-era Czechoslovakia. Lots of fascinating facts and insights about Czechoslovakia, but with a heavy dose of bias. I guess that’s what happens when a politician writes a history book.

Acknowledging the ways racism is and *has always been* embedded in every major US institution - from local government to the school system to the FBI - is the first step towards countering it.

Source: To be clear, this does not excuse this messed up tweet in any way. As far as I can tell, the FBI still has not apologized to Dr. King, his family, or the other members of the Civil Rights movement whose rights were violated by the FBI.

This is a really bad look given that the FBI tried to blackmail Dr. King into suicide, but it's also missing full context: Since 2014, training for FBI recruits at Quantico includes a unit on the FBI's legacy of racism+corruption, including their "shameful" treatment of Dr. King.

In 1932, Diego Rivera was asked to paint a mural in Rockefeller Center. But when the conservative John Rockefeller saw it featured Communist themes, he had it destroyed. In response, Rivera painted it again- this time with an image of Rockefeller drinking, gambling, & womanizing.

2/ I’ve been told my last tweet was “truly, unbelievably boring” so I’ll try to spice it up! Sad housewife + buff fish-man + an unreliable narrator = a vivid, dreamlike read. This novella is “The Shape of Water” meets Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening”. Highly recommend!

The way the later work (“Death of the Author”) clarifies the earlier (“Pierre Menard”) is particularly beautiful because Borges wrote about this exact phenomenon in his essay “Kafka and His Precursors” (see quote from photo).

1/ The highlight of this Borges collection was “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote”. When I read this story as a high schooler, I didn’t get it. Since then, I read Barthes’ “Death of the Author”, which despite being written 30 years later perfectly elucidates Borges’ story!
