An update: I understand that countries have not yet got to discussing the "30%" bit of 30x30 In fact, they haven't yet resolved any of the numbers in the agreement e.g. how much land to restore, what % of species to save from extinction etc Lots of work for ministers to do! twitter.com/daisydunnesci/…

As talks move to week 2 #COP15, ministers need to get their hands dirty in negotiations once they arrive. Political attention on finance & 30*30 is key. China also needs to provide a clear roadmap & speed up the process early. Failing to do so might imply a protracted end game.

Brilliant thread explaining very clearly what the debt problem means for development and climate action.

This week Ghana is almost certain to default on its debt. Another canary in the coalmine for a much bigger debt problem that’s hurtling towards us. A $2.5 trillion #debt shock A 🧵on debt, why it matters, and why poor countries pay more to borrow money. 👇

After Egypt, it's the UAE's turn. The Gulf petrostate has been preparing for Cop28 for months. And it wants it all: to become a major clean energy financier while continuing to sell the world its oil. Here's a peek at what the UAE might have in store 👇

The UAE was the first Gulf state to announce a net zero target but it is yet to explain how it will deliver. Without a rollout at scale of carbon capture technologies, it “is predicated on the rest of the world failing to achieve net zero," says Jim Krane of Rice University.

China is the African continent’s biggest trading partner and bilateral trade hit a record high of $254 billion last year. The U.S. — sub-Saharan Africa’s fourth largest trading partner — recorded a more modest $64 billion in bilateral trade in 2021.

They don't seem to have got the memo from the UN that using offsets and net zero targets to cover up fossil fuel expansion is "rank deception" 👇 climatechangenews.com/2022/11/08/tox

Meanwhile, on the carbon market. Oil and gas producer Hess Corporation, which is part of the consortium drilling oil offshore in Guyana, is offsetting its emissions by spending $750m over 10 years to buy avoided deforestation (Redd+) credits in Guyana🤦‍♀️ businesswire.com/news/home/2022

After the EU opened up the issue at #Cop27, I looked at the data on who should pay for loss and damage? Answer: Qatar. Maybe South Korea. Not China. Definitely not India. But the biggest deal would be if the US paid it’s fair share for once

The EU published plans to eventually certify removals of CO2 from the atmosphere. This policy’s a slow burn, many decisive details were left out and will have to be worked out later - including how removals will count towards countries’ climate targets 3/5

Vanuatu says more than a 100 countries are backing its call to request an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on states' climate obligations. That's above the threshold it needs to give the court a mandate to act. Full story 👇 climatechangenews.com/2022/11/30/van
