Fascinating thread about police training and interesting discussion in the comments — recommended.

I have been taught to yell “stop resisting” and “drop your weapon” after firing a gun, because bystanders will remember you said it and their memory will automatically reverse the order of the events to make it make sense. Their testimony will support yours, because of this.

Three true things: 1) Red states have a lot of guns. 2) More guns = more gun death. So people in red states are more likely to die of gun violence (homicide + suicide) 3) 34 states have higher rates of gun death than IL, no matter what RW media tells you to the contrary.

This times a thousand. Cops don't just happen to turn out the way they do! Here's a piece from 20 years ago. I'll bet I could find something similar every year since: tmcdermott.com/cops/

Calls for “more training” ignore the reality of actual police training. How do you think the culture of violence is passed down? themarshallproject.org/2020/07/22/one

MN Police claimed George Floyd died of a “medical incident” & made 0 mention of kneeling on his neck for 9 min Memphis Police claimed Tyre Nichols had “trouble breathing” & made 0 mention of beating him for 10 min Media needs to hold police accountable—not parrot their claims.

Woke up thinking about Tyre Nichols’ family. Thinking about a man who was a father, a son, a friend. Thinking about how unsettling it was to have a countdown to the release of the tape. Thinking about what it means, for all of us, to have to go through this again & again & again.

Florida cops handcuff homeless man who committed no crime and put him in squad car; instead of taking him to jail they take him to the woods where they beat him unconscious and leave him handcuffed and bleeding to die.

since this will come up a lot in media coverage of Tyre Nichols in Memphis: while I get that it seems narratively significant that the officers are black. Statistically, it is unsurprising. In tracking police violence, we never found that race of the officer made much difference

Hamilton Ave in Red Hook, Brooklyn, before-and-after the construction of the BQE. Designed by Robert Moses, the highway cut Red Hook in half along its central thoroughfares, Hamilton & Hicks, requiring the demolition of dozens of blocks and the forcible displacement of thousands.

Surprisingly, these military armored trucks didn’t prevent the shooting.

As patrons at a Circle K in Yakima ate their food, a 21-year-old man opened the door of the store and began shooting people, killing three. Police say it was “random.” This is the logical outcome of guns for anyone, anywhere, any time. nytimes.com/2023/01/24/us/

I so appreciate this thread patiently explaining why over policing of low level crimes is a stupid strategy and causes a lot of harm.

1. This is pretty much the police position, word for word, about why they spend virtually all of their massive budgets going after people for committing the tiniest of crimes. This was also the justification for stop and frisk. twitter.com/mattyglesias/s…

No. There’s no way to indirectly defeat the far right by mechanically arranging the government to be more local, centralized, or whatever. The far right isn’t a product of badly optimized government, but core human prejudices given political agency. It must be directly confronted

Replying to @HeerJeet and @mattywheelz
Americans love the idea of local control of education, meaning that those sorts of efforts must be fought at the local level. In this case, DeSantis' new rules go *against* the principle of local control, which *could* be used against the rules, if Democrats wished...
