Python has grown type signatures since I last used it and I'm very confused. Not unhappy, just confused.

yes, and it's because in Python (without `__future__.annotations`) types are normal expressions

It does mean that even though you may be using the latest tooling for checking your types, if you want your final python code to work on 3.6 you sometimes have to do some work when you use a type before the def (usually using a string) because the types are *not* ignored entirely
