You: wow, this data is trash. Me, an intellectual: wow, these data are trash.

For those interested in the status of Ice Disk 2020, the webcam that Brown University installed last year is still active and you can view it here:

New paper out in Nature Climate Change. The first law of thermodynamics is a harsh mistress: localized radiative forcing leads to the entire atmosphere scrambling to rebalance energy fluxes. We focus here on the impacts of local vs remote radiative forcing on equatorial warming

In my family, we opted out of the whole "buying presents" this year. Too mindlessly consummistic. Instead, we exchanged extremely personal questions followed by endless silences until we were floating in an ocean of sadness.

Definitely - and not even just at these awful levels too. Have had significantly (maybe incredibly?) more constructive/less demoralizing experiences with open vs closed journals both as reviewer + author.

Your beef seems at least somewhat personal, and obviously as neither I nor anyone outside knows details, maybe resolve w parties involved, because slinging mud at your colleagues and friends without evidence is definitely going to be unpopular

Many of us just love doing basic science and to engage as we can. I bet we all agree FF$ should be out of climate research, but also remember that such $ pales in comparison to NSF/NOAA/ONR. The FF war is fought and won in public and politics, not in academia.

I feel you conflate climate science w climate activism. They require different skills, desires, motivations. I greatly admire people who engage in both arenas (e.g. - ppl affl w HUCE!) but that some dont isnt bc of suppression by FF$.

Harvard has a $40 billion endowment but many of its grad students can barely afford to pay rent. $40 billion endowment but its graduate students don’t have comprehensive mental health or dental coverage. isn’t asking for anything unreasonable, it’s asking for respect.

I’d review more if I got paid for it. It’s hard to accept review requests while between postdoc positions. 💰 security > service. Positions should be longer/more secure and/or reviewers should get paid to buffer the insecurity. 💡Freelance Manuscript Reviewer💡

So for my plenary talk, I have decided to [drumroll please] opt out. Instead, I will attend remotely, e-chat with students & colleagues, post my would-have-been talk online, and write about the experience. Thanks for everyone's thoughtful, heartfelt input!

Tomorrow we set sail from Nome, Alaska towards the Beaufort Sea. We'll be studying Arctic storms, coastal ocean dynamics and interactions between waves and sea ice. This area has seen some of the lowest sea ice…
