Okay enough Iowa jokes, time for a serious tweet: I am psyched to see Discord using more Rust. My team at work doesn’t use any currently, and are very happy with our Go and Typescript services. Languages aren’t sports teams.

How about just stop rewriting and start writing new cool stuff! I love c++, rust, nim, lisp, etc. Each of them have uses and each of them is the right tool for certain jobs... seriously stop treating languages like football teams in terms of adoration! Don't be possessed!

This, I've never identified myself as an X dev, always being open to learning new things is key for every aspect of our lives IMO. Also don't think PL Zealotry matches with engineering, it's like you build things using only a hammer because you think its the best thing ever.

Because all highly successful libraries or frameworks are highly opinionated. We can accept this and adapt, or ignore it and blame insufficient proselytizing. I choose the former.

Although I don't personally like the language Go, it gets this right: it removes choices, which has numerous practical benefits to a business.

Mathematicians don't have the "cache invalidation" problem, so they go hard on fucking up naming things.

The code we have is a tangled mess. I don't want to teach people how to masochistically figure out messes. Good documentation exposes how easy an API is to teach, and motivatez refactoring. Library authors should all discover this by writing good docs and tutorials.

If you want to do something fancy, that’s fine, just give me a better reason than “look, so fancy!” My workplace is more or less banning Haskell for new projects. If you want to know what failure looks like, this is it. Nobody cancels a success story.
