Yesterday, I had a nearly 90-minute heart-wrenching meeting with Ms. Abe's mother, a woman of great strength and kindness. I am meeting with Ms. Platt's family later this week. My office and our Victim Services team are committed to supporting both families.

Although of course no one predicted this tragedy, it is true that my office, and other justice partners, could have done things differently, which might have avoided this terrible outcome.

I have to start with what we could have done differently in house. We are carefully reviewing what happened and how the District Attorney’s Office can work to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.

We are focused on three things as we move forward: holding Mr. McAlister accountable for the harm he caused; supporting the victims’ families; and working internally in our own office and along with our justice partners to make changes to prevent this kind of tragedy.

He was arrested over 50 times and let loose by you. What did you think would happen? This was inevitable. Do you care enough to change your terrible policies? Doubtful.

How is killing a pedestrian with a multi-thousand-pound-plus vehicle *while drunk* not at least Murder 2?
-
Because you cannot prove that whoever is drunk driving is doing it to intentionally kill someone. Intent is extremely hard to prove, and honestly if someone DID try to charge and convict a drunk driver of murder II it'd never happen bc of it.
