It is my estimate that we have between $400M and $900M of intravenous drug GMV flowing through SF annually. If we have 1,000 dealers, they are making ~$450,000- $900,000 each in annual revenue. Theoretically, if the city collected sales tax it would net ~$40-80M/year.pic.twitter.com/qigY7Ozwx1

Meanwhile, the cost of treating an overdose is $92,000. 300 people died of an overdose last year. That is $28M that was spent *only* towards the people who died. I am still hunting for the number of total overdoses (2/x) Source 1:https://khn.org/morning-breakout/the-cost-of-treating-an-opioid-overdose-92400/ …

If you assume 2.5x ER visits per death, then assume we are spending ~$70M a year on overdoses. If you assume 5x ER visits per death, then we are spending $140M a year on overdoses. That is just on the treatment alone. Doesn't count police time, EMS rides, etc (3/x)

We have so many "frequent fliers" (people who go to ER often) and overdoses, that we are at "ambulance level zero" daily. This means that *no ambulance is available & you wait for one.* Last August we reached level zero *25x in 1 day.* Source: https://bit.ly/2ym0LyC  (4/x)

Meanwhile, as a city we give out 14,500 needles a day. 60% are returned. We also give out $600 in cash per month. We also provide free treatment and spend ~$200M/year on SROs rooms for people. A very high % of overdoses are happening in or around the SROs. (5/x)

Just to clarify we prosecute drug dealers all the time. It's about 20% of my general felony caseload. If you walk into the Hall of Justice on any day of the week you'll see drug sales cases being prosecuted. You are linking to a tweet I posted about users. Not dealers.

With all due respect - calling concerned citizens "Karens" is not that hard-hitting... Nobody is tearing anybody down here. This is not petty. We have thousands of people overdosing in the streets and dying.

Thank you Chesa for clarifying! That absolutely makes sense. 20% sounds quite high. I would imagine your team has their hands quite full.

Thanks. Do you think non-violent dealers selling fentanyl (not other drugs) should be prosecuted like violent criminals? They're effectively killing off drug users by selling a car more lethal drug effectively causing homicide indirectly. cc @MyTwolffamily

What are the most common outcomes of said prosecutions? How many take a Felony vs. Plea Bargaining to a Misdemeanor? How many cases does a dealer have to catch before they do real time? What's the average sentence? How does credit for time served play into sentencing?

Sure, take his word for it, he's prosecuting dealers all the time; but there's no data to support that claim.

Chesa Boudin: "Drug dealers are 20% of my general felony case load." Boudin's math: 1 drug dealer out of 5 felonies that Boudin has chosen to prosecute equals his 20%. And then, he releases all 5 felons because of the virus. But, he'll prosecute them some day, year, or decade.

Thank you for engaging on this important issue. 20% seems a very low based on my personal experience viewing criminal activity on the streets. Can you help us understand the disconnect? Do felony cases require evidence of organization? Or do they simply require officer testimony?
