for me, this is a reminder that art inhabits spaces that researchers cannot. was doing this as early as 2011, there was a talk in 2013.. but carrying physical phones past the google offices has a completely different cultural significance.

This is an excellent example of finding what is being measured and figuring out how to impact those variables to produce a desired outcome. Hacking 101

Pursuing a project with one official goal as a proxy for another more distant goal which you don’t talk about may be the only way for some people to be more ambitious than others want to permit, but it introduces the risk of losing sight of your real objective.

“…individuals perceive typefaces, type families, and type styles to have ideological qualities… (and) rate typefaces more favorably when perceived as sharing their ideological orientation.” From & ’s study:

In what year will a non-text based programming language be used widely by professional software devs?

I would probably put a web presence in the category of situations where a relatively small investment of effort can make a difference. Different kinds of web presences have different kinds of effort/reward ratios.

Ofc. certain kinds of improvement may happen through neither abrupt stair-step levels or linear diagonal upward slopes, but rather logarithmic & exponential (& bell-shaped?) curves where a little effort can make a disproportionate difference, or too much has diminishing returns.

In contrast to those abrupt kinds of cut-off points drastically altering outcomes, more “analog” types of variables you could gradually increase might in theory offer more opportunities for someone to improve in situations where a large-scale status change would be unreachable.

... and then realistically speaking there’s ~3-6 dif. values for how much education (ie. the reputation of the last university you went to) & economic resources will impact your opportunities in life. Ofc. there’s really more minute variations, but not enough to be life-changing.

There’s lots of potential attributes which act more like digital either/or variables in terms of their influence on your likelihood of success. Gender being a big one ...

(Though I’ve been kind of terrible at allocating my time by that standard, in terms of ex. spending too much time on experiences I wasn’t able to convert into concrete outcomes or even credentials.)

Obviously age is a specific one. I’ve spent too much time too close to the tech world to the point where I begin to wonder about whether various kinds of experiences make enough of a difference to offset opportunity cost of how much older you will have become after you have them.

What kinds of small-scale factors position a person to be either closer or further away from opportunities to have potential + make a meaningful difference of some kind?

Because I'm grouchy about the "everyone uses npm" discourse today, I just wanna remind people the YOU CAN STILL MAKE WEBSITES IN WHATEVER TOOLS YOU WANT HTML + JS and a lil vanilla CSS? Just HTML and some gifs? Heckin' ASCII? Also theres a club for it

Two comments about book subtitles: 1) Scholarly books often use “and” phrases in subtitles; trade books almost never do. Anding collocates but doesn’t synthesize. 2) Actual readers mostly ignore subtitles. Think about some books on your shelf. Can you even name the subtitles?

If you had to draw a line for pre- and post-algorithmic timeline, content recommendation (the, uh, ATCR-boundary) internet, what would be on either side of the line? Pre: LiveJournal. Blogger. (But... before Blogdex?). Tumblr. Post: FB feed for sure, Amazon's "also bought"?

Speaking of Norwegian road tunnels, the Lærdal Tunnel—the world’s longest—includes artificial caves lit to invoke sunrise, to help counteract driver fatigue. Inspired by research into “driver behavior in long road tunnels.” Human neurology, underground.
