Teaching students to recognize privilege isn't about feeling guilt or blame due to their identities. It's about examining the power people have in different situations—and helping them recognize opportunities to advocate for others.

For all the talk of CRT and what Ss should be taught about our history, what’s being lost is an understanding that learning about hard history (e.g., slavery, segregation, exclusion) is inherently patriotic. If a person loves their country, they need to learn ALL it’s history.

How should we confront our history? 100 years ago, white mobs burned down Greenwood District in the Tulsa Race Massacre. We invite you to discuss these injustices w/ your students & offer Jacobs’ quote to begin the conversation.

“When a man has his wages stolen from him, year after year, and the laws sanction and enforce the theft, how can he be expected to have more regard to honesty than the man who robs him?” Harriet Ann Jacobs

Do not for a moment think you cannot change what exists. This world is a social construction. This world was built & it can be rebuilt. Use the knowledge you accrue not to perpetuate despair but for action & transformation. Use your knowledge to reimagine the world. -Clint Smith
