New book by Deborah Orr about growing up in Motherwell in the 1960's and 70's is full of memory-jogging anecdotes and observations. A fascinating read for those who remember the so-called slum clearances, power cuts and "The People's Friend".

Sometimes I lament the lack of PhD camaraderie in some places, but then again, do I want to spend my lunches talking about ‘batch cooking’, ‘refrigerator size’ and ‘multiple screen computers’ ?

I’ll be the first to admit that I would happily sit down and read through ‘Scotch tweed. A monthly journal devoted to the advancement of technique in wool manufacture’ (1924-1938)
