... as such, there is no "raw HTML" Googlebot, rather.. there is the download step, then execute and render, then ... you get the drift. Your browser works in the same way too, with IPC messages flying between processes.

But Googlebot previously didn’t execute JS, so it would index pages after download/parse of the HTML. Does that still happen, or does indexing only occur after *all* the steps (execute, render, etc)?

Googlebot has been executing javascript for many, many years. I would also suggest you change your mental (sequential) framing: is it possible to detect text and links in raw HTML? Yes, both browsers and crawlers rely on this to optimize loading and rendering performance...

... but does this mean we can skip executing JS? No, because there is additional content and links that may only be visible once those steps are done.

Point being, serving HTML with static content+markup is still a great performance best practice that helps both browsers to render faster, and crawlers to find things more quickly. That said, this does not mean that JS is "bad", it just requires more work & time to process.

I guess what he is trying to ask is, should we expect pages with content hidden behind JS to be picked up and indexed instantly now with this change or will there still be a delay?

no, they're not and cannot be equivalent in speed. JavaScript requires additional CPU cycles, which by definition take resources and more time. The actual latency will vary based on JS in question, site, etc.

Here is a good example to guess how fast it is. This website http://bugs.chromium.org  migrated very recently to a new UI and now is using the shadowRoot to store all the text contents. Only Googlebot evergreen can index it. Currently, there are ~20/30 pages indexed per day....

Why is this so hard to talk about this issue? Let's face it, some people are using web components massively in production and this *performance* issue cannot be denied. SSR won't really help to fix this since HTML doesn't offer any solution to serialize these contents /cc @JohnMu

sorry, missed this.. How are you measuring 20/30 pages per day?

I was measuring this by looking at the search results of the "past week" during 4-5 consecutive days. I cannot measure this more precisely on my end.

One of the problems with that site is that's barely crawlable. For example, https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/list … (linked from the homepage) is blocked from crawling. We have to find the URLs linked from elsewhere on the web, it's quite inefficient & independent of the framework used.

Well, this does not explain the fact that almost all pages have as title "chromium Monorail". This clearly shows there is an issue with the framework used...
