Coleman Barks’s translations of Rumi are problematic at best. I shared this article with my students after reading some English translations that they didn’t understand. Barks takes the depth out of Rumi. He turns Rumi into feel-good greeting card verse.

Whenever I work with/teach his poetry, I always give a background to his and his family’s religious background. Otherwise it’s harder to make sense of some things.

Muslims especially of Persianate descent or where the language extends have known it since long. Much as one loves Coleman Barks, he hasn't translated Rumi but made himself the new Rumi and gained traction. Wonder if such liberties can be taken with say translating Milton for eg.

No issues but should be more upfront and honest and not use Rumi as the template to market poetry as interpretation...

He used Islam to spread his own type of paganism. In that time there were many others like Rumi and Hallaç-i Mansur apparently tried to make their own way which has very big conflicts with islam. Therefore I think that it's quiet OK to erasure Islam from his poetry.
